Spotify Removes AI-Generated Songs With Fake Streams

Spotify recently reported that it has detected and removed music created by Boomy, a program that uses AI to generate full songs. In a statement to Music Business Worldwide, an unnamed Spotify representative said that the company is serious about removing fake streams.

"Artificial streaming is a longstanding, industry-wide issue that Spotify is working to stamp out across our service," Spotify said. “When we identify or are alerted to potential cases of stream manipulation, we mitigate their impact by taking action that may include the removal of streaming numbers and the withholding of royalties. This allows us to protect royalty payouts for honest, hardworking artists.”

There is no evidence that suggests Boomy was involved in the false streams. "Boomy is categorically against any type of manipulation or artificial streaming," Boomy said. "We are working with industry partners to address this issue and restart the distribution of Boomy artist content on the Spotify platform."

AI-generated music has gained a lot of attention and prompted much discussion, particularly online as of late. Producer Timbaland recently broadcasted a track that he created with AI-generated Notorious B.I.G. vocals on his social media platforms.

"I always wanted to do this and I never got a chance to. I always wanted to work with Big and I never got a chance to — until today. It came out right!" the Virginia produced said in the video clip.

As for monetized platforms streaming AI generated content, Universal Music questioned "what side of history" the offending platforms want to be on. The Notorious B.I.G, Drake, Michael Jackson, Kanye West and The Weekend have all had their voices utilized in recent popular AI generated songs.
