The writers strike has been ongoing since May 2, with writers picketing since contract negotiations for livable wages between the guild and Hollywood studios crumbled. Thousands of people have joined the picket lines outside of Netflix offices, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony, Amazon, and other Los Angeles studios and production sites.
Earlier in May, Flavor Flav showed up with pizzas at Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, California where Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson was also on hand to support, along with Ted Lasso creator/actor Jason Sudeikis. As Public Enemy's classic "Fight The Power" blared in the background, Flav rapped along, hyping the crowd up with a bullhorn.
Snoop has also lent vocal support to the writers, comparing their challenges with streaming models to that of music artists. During a panel in early May at Milken Institutes’ Global Conference, Snoop said music artists should take note from screen writers who are fighting for fair compensation.
“[Artists] need to figure it out the same way the writers are figuring it out,” he said per Variety. "The writers are striking because [of] streaming, they can’t get paid. Because when it’s on the platform, it’s not like in the box office.”
He said as of right now, the compensation model just doesn't make sense. "I don’t understand how the fuck you get paid off of that shit," he said. "Somebody explain to me how you can get a billion streams and not get a million dollars?… That’s the main gripe with a lot of us artists is that we do major numbers… but it don’t add up to the money. Like where the fuck is the money?”
