Chad Hugo On Loving the Blues: "It Got Me In Touch With A Lot of Things"

Chad Hugo has always been the more enigmatic half of the iconic production duo The Neptunes, in contrast to Pharrell’s more brash and outgoing persona. As part of the Grammy-winning duo, Hugo helped craft smash hits for Clipse, Britney Spears, Kelis, Snoop Dogg and more. While Pharrell is making the promotional rounds with longtime friend and collaborator Pusha T, in a recent interview in GQ magazine, Hugo reveals that he can be found at home playing the blues.

“I think that everyone needs to know the 12-bar blues," he says. “It’s easy to sing a song if you know the blues.”

"New Orleans blues got me in touch with a lot of things," he says further. "Like how those guys play the Dixieland blues where they're improvising at the same time on the same chord and they stop at the same time. A lot of people would think that it's dinosaur music and it's not really cool."

"I don't know if people appreciate that these days," he adds. "Everyone's forward thinking."
