Yasiin Bey Describes His Upcoming Collaboration With The Alchemist As 'Lo-Fi, Hi-Tech'

Yasiin Bey sat down recently with The Guardian, where he described Foresnsics, his upcoming collaborative project with The Alchemist as "lo-fi, hi-tech high art". According to a press release, the album is "the first of a number of upcoming releases intended to inextricably link the acquisition of music to the artwork and supporting video footage, creating a stronger and more creative bond with fans."

Forensics was first revealed late last year, when the duo announced a live Paris event, to debut new music from the project at the top of the year. "Over beats steeped in psychedelia and spiritual soul, Bey skips between the personal and political with profundity, as has long been his gift. This is Bey’s deepest, most focused work in years," The Guardian says.

Bey also spoke on the current music industry. "When the system itself changed, with the advent of streaming, artists got screwed even further", he says. “That shit is gross, paying people part of a penny for their music. Those motherfuckers are cold blooded, man like Scrooge McDuck, lickin’ his lips as he jumps into a pool of gold coins. The music industry of now makes the one I started out in seem charitable. It’s completely exploitative.”

In a recent Rock The Bells exclusive, producer Mannie Fresh discussed his unreleased project with Bey. It's been over a decade since word first broke that super producer Mannie Fresh had produced a project for the Brooklyn MC, Yasiin Bey, tentatively titled 'OMFGOD BK X NOLA.' The buzz went even higher when the duo played some of the songs at an exclusive event at SXSW, and even released the single "Black Jesus" in 2013.

"I'm not the person who's ever had an artist where I leaked the record, unless they gave me permission," revealed. "I'll play it, because I know people wanna hear it, but you're not gonna hear it leak from me, you know what I'm saying? So if he says it's cool then I'm dropping it," he added.

The Big Tymers spitter further clarified that the initial delay came because Yasiin had at least one other project coming out around the same time, but did not thwart the idea that the songs could still come out. He did, however say the versions that come out might be different from the originals.

"[Yasiin didn't want the project released] cause he was working on something else," Mannie noted. "Even the version that y'all heard yesterday was me remixing it, so I've been sitting on this so long I started remixing the songs."
