Wyclef Jean of The Fugees is set to host the first Carribean Music Awards which are being held on August 31 at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

The show will livestream on YouTube at 8p.m. ET according to Billboard. Clef talked to NBC's Today Show last week about the motivation for the show, citing the 2020 episode of Verzuz which featured Beanie Man and Bounty Killer.

"[The success of that Verzuz] reminded us how much we love the Caribbean," he explained. "For me whats exciting is Carribean culture is shared, whether its fashion or music."

Wycled hosted the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards in Stockholm where he made his entrance on an elephant, and he told the Today Show that he wishes to make a similar entrance this year. I want the entrance to be grand and very carnival-like," he said.

Trinidadian soca singer and producer Machel Montano is set to receive a lifetime achievement award. In 2019, Montano topped Billboard's Reggae Albums chart with G.O.A.T.

The Caribbean Music Awards are presented by the Caribbean Elite Group, and consist of 26 categories across several genres which include reggae, dancehall, soca, kompa and zouk. Voting started on April 6 and closes on Monday, July 31. Tickets range in price from $60.50 to $161.00 and can be purchased here.
