The Game Speaks On Nas Cosigning His 'Drillmatic' Album Title

The title of The Game's upcoming album Drillmatic: Heart vs. Mind has ties to Nas' classic Illmatic debut as well as Chicago rapper Lil Durk and London's Hip-Hop subgenre. The Game sat down with HipHopDX recently and clarified the origins of the title.

"Originally I gave the title to Durk because he's from the Chi," Game revealed. "I text Durk like, 'Yo call your next album Drillmatic', and he was like 'Yo that's fire'. Two years passed and he didn't call nothin 'Drillmatic' so I was like, 'Ima reel that back in.'"

Game then tells the story of how Nas cosigned the title through his current collaborator and producer Hit-Boy.

"Hit-Boy hit me on January 1 and asked 'Whatchu doing?' And I was like 'Shit I'm smoking,' and he was like, 'We should do an album,'" he recalled.

Game and Hit-Boy linked and completed nine songs in three days. "He was like, "We need a title,' and I was like, 'Drillmatic,'" Game remembers.

According to Game, Nas was in the studio on the fourth day and blessed the title after Game shared it with him. "I don't want to step on no toes, especially not people I look up to," Game said. "So yeah we got Nas' blessing, we started to run it, and then it took a life of its own, and now we're here."

The Game is hosting an album release show tonight (7/8) at The Novo in Los Angeles.
