According to photographer Jonathan Mannion, Slick Rick is readying a new album. Mannion posted to IG last week that he had a sit down with Rick, and that new material is indeed coming.
"This man has lived a helluva life to reach this current calm," he captioned a photo of the two sipping Moet. "Blessed to have received the call that the new album was on the way, a fresh new approach to tunes, now with newly created legendary photos to match."
Mannion has worked with Slick Rick since 1988, and says that they've always had a good working relationship. As he has done with Bob James, Alicia Keys and many others recently, Rick bestowed his signature gold chains and medallions upon Mannion.
"We collaborate well," he continued. "As I did the first time that I ever photographed the incomparable ruler in 1988, I brought champagne to toast him. Moet Chandon always flowing. I was also 'knighted' again, a renewal of vows, of sorts with nearly every piece of his legendary gold, platinum, diamond encrusted heavy metal available weighing down my neck. Beyond honored!"
Slick Rick has had a busy year, celebrating the 35th anniversary of his iconic debut The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick, performing at Hip-Hop 50th anniversary concerts around the country, and embarking on a collaboration with the iconic Puma brand.
"It's more than just a fabric, it's a symbol of artistry, authenticity and our rebellion," he said of the athletic wear brand that has been a mainstay in Hip-Hop for decades.
Slick Rick followed Hip-Hop icons such as Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, and Salt-N-Pepa when he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 Grammy Awards.
