Salt-N-Pepa File Lawsuit Against Universal Music For Ownership Of Their Master Recordings

Salt-N-Pepa filed a lawsuit yesterday (5/19) against Universal Music Group, citing the Copyright Act of 1976 in an attempt to gain ownership of their catalog of music. The Copyright Act of 1976 allows writers and copyright holders to reclaim the rights to their works after 35 years.

Salt-N-Pepa claim that the rights to their debut album, Hot,Cool & Vicious, and the single push "Push It" are due to revert to them this year. They claim further that the rights to 1993's Very Necessary are also due this year, long with other titles next year.

Salt-N-Pepa will be will be inducted into the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This years class also includes Outkast, Chubby Checker, Thom Bell, Joe Cocker, Sound Garden, The White Stripes, Bad Company, Cyndi Lauper, Carol Kaye, and Lenny Woranker.

Salt -N-Pepa and Outkast join Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, Public Enemy, NWA, LL COOL J, and Missy Elliot as Hip-Hop acts inducted into the prestigious hall. Salt-N-Pepa entered the scene in 1985 as Super Nature with "The Show Stoppa", a response to Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick's gargantuan summer hit, "The Show". They went on to release five studio albums between 1986 and 1997, influencing generations of female rap artists.
