Hip-Hop acts have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2007 when pioneering act Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 became the first rap group inducted. And most recently, Queens legends A Tribe Called Quest.
Below are the Hip-Hop acts who have been inducted into the RRHOF to date.
This Bronx sextet comprised of DJ Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Kid Creole, Scorpio, Keith Cowboy and Rahiem is one of the most dynamic acts from rap music's first generation. Hits like "Superappin'", "Freedom," and "It's Nasty" solidified them as early underground rap heroes until "The Message," which introduced socio-political lyrics into the genre made them a household name. The group was inducted into the RRHOF by Jay-Z in 2007.
Run-DMC burst onto the scene in 1983 with an attitude and sound that changed the face of Hip-Hop. Their stripped down beats on songs such as "Sucker MC's", "Hollis Crew" and "It's Like That" courtesy of the late producer Larry Smith ushered in a new era of beat heavy rap, and their later Aerosmith duet "Walk This Way" introduced them to a broader audience. Eminem inducted them into the RRHOF in 2009.
Originally a Punk act, the Beastie Boys made noise in rap's underground with a few singles on Def Jam Records before their breakout album License To Ill dropped in 1986. Later releases, Pauls Boutique and Ill Communication, would solidify the group and one of Hip-Hop's most cutting edge and innovative acts. The Beasties were inducted into the Hall by their Def Jam labelmates Chuck D and LL COOL J in 2012.
As Hip-Hop's first outwardly militant act, Public Enemy's stated goal was to raise 10,000 potential Black leaders. Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, Professor Griff, and The S1W's turned rap on its ear with hits like "Public Enemy #1," "Rebel Without A Pause" and "Fight The Power." They were inducted by the late Harry Belafonte and Spike Lee in 2013.
Dubbed the world's most dangerous group, N.W.A. created a new subgenre and turned rap music upside down with their 1988 opus Straight Outta Compton. Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, DJ Yella and Dr. Dre were unapologetically street in their approach and with their subject matter, which took on law enforcement and the establishment. They were inducted into the RRHOF in 2016 by Kendrick Lamar.
A literal child of revolution, Tupac Shakur hit the music scene in the early 1990s with a charm and charisma that quickly transferred over into the big screen. His incarceration and later signing to Death Row Records was followed by hits like "California Love," "Hail Mary" and "To Live In Die In L.A.." Pac was posthumously inducted into the RRHOF in 2017 by Snoop Dogg.
The Notorious B.I.G. entered the rap scene in the early 1990s with a robust voice and witty wordplay. Biggie, as he was affectionately known, rose to prominence quickly with hits like "One More Chance," Juicy" and "Hypnotize." Biggie has long been celebrated as 'The King of New York." He was inducted into the Rock Hall in 2020 by Diddy.
LL COOL J burst onto the scene in 1984, but a 1985 cameo in the Hip-Hop film Krush Groove quickly catapulted him into the stratosphere. Full length releases like Radio, BAD, Mama Said Knock You Out and Mr. Smith combined with several television and movie roles have established LL as Hip-Hop's most enduring figure, with a career that shows no signs of slowing down. He was inducted into the RRHOF by Dr. Dre in 2021.
Jay-Z hit our radars in 1996 with Reasonable Doubt. Jay entered as a man with a story to tell about the streets and how to survive them unscathed. Releases such as The Blueprint, The Black Album, and Magna Carta combined with several wise business moves turned Jay into one of the most recognizable and successful rap artists in the games history. He was inducted in 2021 by comedian Dave Chappelle.
Eminem was well respected on the underground battle rap circuit prior to releasing the Slim Shady LP in 1999. Em's success following the release of his debut and its follow up, The Marshall Mathers LP, solidified him as one of Hip-Hop's most marketable talents. Eminem was inducted into the RRHOF by his mentor Dr. Dre in 2022.
Missy Elliot, one of hip-Hop's most decorated female artists, and one of its most energetic live performers joined a growing number of Hip-Hop artists who've been inducted into the Rock Hall, including Eminem, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, 2Pac, Run DMC, N.W.A., Jay-Z, LL COOL J, The Notorious B.I.G, Public Enemy, and Beastie Boys. Missy was inducted by Queen Latifah in 2023.
ATCQ hit the scene in 1990 with their debut album, People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm. The Low End Theory, Midnight Marauders, Beats, Rhymes And Life, The Love Movement, and We Got It From Here followed, delivering a blend of Jazz samples (and live instrumentation) with Boom Bap beats, establishing Tribe as one of the most exciting acts of the 90's. ATCQ was inducted by Dave Chapelle in 2024.
