Rick Ross Takes "Accountability" for Wing Stop Labor Law Violations

The Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division in Mississippi has fined several Wing Stop locations operated by rapper Rick Ross and his family. On August 11, the division announced that it had collected $114,427 in "back wages, liquidated damages and civil penalties" from five Wing Stop locations in the state which are operated by Boss Wing Enterprises.

The division also recovered $51,674 in back wages and liquidated damages for 244 workers with an assessment of $62,753 in civil penalties. Boss Wings Enterprises LLC allegedly forced employees to pay for their own uniforms, safety training, annd background checks. Additionally, cash register shortages caused some employees wages to fall beneath the $7.25 federal minimum wage, according to the Labor Department.

“Restaurant industry employees work hard, often for low wages, and many depend on every dollar earned to make ends meet,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Audrey Hall in Jackson, Mississippi. “The law prevents Boss Wing Enterprises LLC from shifting operating costs to workers by deducting the costs of uniforms, cash register shortages or training expenses, or to allow a worker’s pay to fall below the minimum wage rate.”

Today (Aug. 17), Ross went on Instagram Stories and took accountability for the issues. “When you’re running a business, there will be mistakes but as the biggest boss, you never make the same mistake twice,” said Ross. “Taking accountability is big when you’re the biggest.”
