Legendary producer Pete Rock was the guest on the latest episode of The Kenny Parker Show, where he discussed creating the beat for the remix of Public Enemy's "Shut 'Em Down". When Kenny Parker says that he heard Pete made the beat in 15 minutes, he interjects, "Maybe less than that I think."

"Everything went through Def Jam, and once I got the job it was go time and I started working on the track," Pete said. "An hour before I had to be there I came up with the basic drums, and I seen a few records laying around, I grabbed an album and used it with the drums, then I started playing around with other records."

I learned that I could sample in key, so I started finding little samples and using the pitch, then doubling it to get every little tone, not missing the actual key of the beat

"Shut 'Em Down" is regarded as one of Pete's best remixes, revered for the panned horn that runs throughout the track. Pete would later remix 1991's "Nighttrain" by Public Enemy, which also appeared on their third album, Apocalypse 91: The Enemy Strikes Black.
