Questlove on the New Roots Album: "We've Been Working on This for Six Years"

In a recent interview with HipHopDX, Roots drummer Questlove discussed the status of the upcoming Roots album and why it isn't finished yet. The Academy Award winning director, producer, and musician said his critically acclaimed film, Summer Of Soul (Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be televised), derailed production of the album.

"Here's the weird thing," he said. "In a normal world, I would have done this film, it would've came out and I would have promoted it for eight to twelve weeks. A funny thing happened — Disney was like 'Hey this is Oscar caliber' and I'm like 'Huh? You sure?'"

Quest called the Oscar win a welcomed speed bump.

"That part of my life I didn't plan," he said. "I'm glad it happened but what it did do was push our album back from happening so now there's a very short window before I start my second movie."

His next movie is a documentary about Sly And The Family Stone which he starts on in October. "We've been working on this album for six years and it's 60 percent done. The fact that it still sounds good after six years of starting and stopping, that's how timeless it is and a return to form."

The upcoming album will be The Roots first since 2014's ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin.
