Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is slated to direct another music documentary. On the heels of his Oscar-winning directorial debut, the acclaimed Summer of Soul, the Roots drummer and bandleader will be examining the life and legacy of music legend Sly Stone, according to Variety.

The Sly Stone project, which is currently untitled, is a look at the famed singer-songwriter who was “breaking all the rules at a time when doing so was extremely challenging, even dangerous.” Sly and the Family Stone saw tremendous critical and commercial success in the 1960s and 1970s with classics like "Stand" and "Dance To The Music." Songs like "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" were groundbreaking records for funk music, and albums like Stand! and There's A Riot Goin' On became landmarks of a generation.

The band fell on tough times in the mid-1970s, as the slow descent into drug addiction led to defections, distractions and the ultimate dissolution of the band and Sly struggling to get his solo career into a groove. The legendary figure would become something of a musical recluse in the 1990s and 2000s before re-emerging somewhat in recent years.

“It goes beyond saying that Sly’s creative legacy is in my DNA,” said Thompson. “It’s a Black musician’s blueprint. To be given the honor to explore his history and legacy is beyond a dream for me.”

MRC Non-Fiction is overseeing the project, with Zarah Zohlman and Shawn Gee of Thompson’s Two One Five Entertainment producing. Common will executive produce via Stardust Films, along with Derek Dudley and Shelby Stone of ID8 Multimedia.
