Pete Rock Criticizes the 'Disrespectful' Usage of Artificial Intelligence in Music

Legendary producer Pete Rock has joined Young Guru, Drake, Universal Music and others who are concerned over artificial intelligence and its place in music.

In a recent series of tweets, the "T.R.O.Y." producer expressed his frustrations. "F%ck AI! there is nothing better than a soul driven human being," he posted on yesterday (4/17). "That’s something a stupid robot can never ever capture. We create our music with real thinking and original ideas. No copycat machine can ever replace what's real and in the blood from real people.Humans!!!!"

In a tweet a few days earlier, he shared similar sentiments. "AI is mad disrespectful and if yall don't see that but think this AI stuff is dope then you are a part of the problem", he said. "They can't beat black culture so what do they do when they can't measure natural talent? Silly shit like AI! AI is such a cowardly act that bears no real soul or feeling."

Jay-Z's engineer Young Guru has shared concerns regarding artificial intelligence recently as well. "This has dominated my Howard group chat for a couple days," Young Guru wrote on IG. "I’m at the point where I can voice my concerns with our current state of AI. I have followed as many versions of what AI could do for some years now. I remember being at MIT and students showing me a project where they were actively feeding a computer “All” the jazz records that ever existed. So that AI could analyze and create music in any style of any musician."

He added, "I didn’t think we would get here this fast with the voice. It’s not the tech, it’s the evil that men do with the tech. There are legal aspects because at this present moment you can’t copyright a voice.” Universal music recently called AI a fraud that should be removed from streaming platforms. "The company has 'a moral and commercial responsibility to our artists to work to prevent the unauthorized use of their music and to stop platforms from ingesting content that violates the rights of artists and other creators,"' a spokesperson from Universal Music Group told CNN. “We expect our platform partners will want to prevent their services from being used in ways that harm artists.”
