LL COOL J On Ghostwriting In Hip-Hop: "It's Like You're A Pop Act"

On the latest episode of Shannon Sharpe's wildly popular Club Shay Shay podcast, guest LL COOL J discussed ghostwriting in Hip-Hop. When asked by Sharpe if he writes or freestyles, LL responds," I write, I write my songs". When asked if he ever had a ghostwriter, L responds that he has collaborated with people on choruses, but he finds it interesting that rumors suggest that he's used a ghostwriter.

When Shannon shares that 50 Cent is rumored to have written "Paradise", LL interjects. "50 wrote the chorus bro. He didn't write [my verses]. People be trippin' , but that's a big compliment for me. When you've been doing it so long, and you're so prolific that people think [that someone else wrote it].

Sharpe then asks LL why ghostwriting is frowned upon so much in Hip-Hop. "Because as an MC, your supposed to write your stuff," he responds. "It's different if you get in the studio and you're working with an artist, and you're writing a song together and collaborating. That would be different from somebody writing my rhymes, my verses, writing out my lyrics. Because then you're not a real MC, it's different, its like being a pop act."
