Large Professor Embraces DJing: "As I Get Older, It's Appropriate"

Large Professor, the multi talented emcee, producer, DJ and former Main Source frontman helped bring classic Hip-Hop to his hometown of Queens at the Rock The Bells Festival on August 6.

Rock The Bells caught up with the "Looking At The Front Door" rapper who said playing at Forest Hills was "beautiful."

"We played this stadium before with Ralph McDaniels, but to be here with Rock the Bells is crazier because we used to listen to 'Rock The Bells' drinkin' 40's with the hard rocks," he remembered. "So to be here representing is a dream come true."

Large Professor also says he's DJ'ing a lot more these days.

"Coming up we tried our hand at all the elements of Hip-Hop," he explained. "That was something that I always had up the sleeves, but never went out with it. It's just appropriate now, just getting older and not wanting to do as much rappin'. I can share some of this knowledge that I have of records."

Large Professor, who's worked with Nas, Eric B. & Rakim, Slick Rick, and A Tribe Called Quest, also talked about educating the next generation about music.

"They can never say that they don't know, because we (the older DJs) are puttin' it out there," he said. "There's a plethora of records out there, so we don't have to spin the same records all the time, and that's what I'm trying to do. The foundation is strong with real Hip-Hop."

Large Professor is staying busy outside of the turntables as well, and says he just released an instrumental album.

"The skateboard community, they listen to just instrumentals and the online community of MC's are just lookin' for beats," he says. "I'm also working on a few new compilations. I've been collaborating with ED OG a lot lately, so I have some things coming."
