Gang Starr released their first gold album Moment of Truth 25 years ago. Powered by its lead single "You Know My Steez," Moment of Truth is widely celebrated as one of the duo's best full-length projects.

"Guru always wanted a Gold album and he even designed the plaque," DJ Premier said in an episode of So Wassup.

It is nearly impossible to separate "You Know My Steez," from its video when discussing it. Premier explained that there had been a four-year hiatus between their last album (Hard To Earn) and the current project.

"To take a four-year break in any genre is risky, but especially in Hip Hop. Our fans stayed loyal and the first single had to be a banger," he explained.

The Terry Heller video was a re-creation of the George Lucas-directed THX 1138 which focused on an underground city where people were controlled by medications and kept in line by a robotic police force. The groundbreaking video which featured cameos by Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Lil Fame of M.O.P. and Das EFX was a perfect accompaniment to the signature Preemo Boom Bap track and Guru's laid-back delivery. "You Know My Steez" successfully built anticipation for Gang Starr's comeback project.

This is a special album right here for so many reasons. Guru was facing prison time and we had taken a four year break.

The second single from Moment... was "The Militia" featuring Big Shug, Guru and Freddie Foxx. The classic posse cut immediately became a fan favorite and the remix, which featured The Lady of Rage and Kurupt, served as a dope bonus that furthered the momentum of the album. Though not a single, "Above The Clouds" featuring Inspectah Deck of the Wu-Tang Clan also became an album favorite, with its offbeat sample loop and Guru and Deck's clever wordplay.

Premier revealed in his "Above The Clouds" episode of So Wassup that Guru wanted Ghostface Killah and Raekwon for a collaboration.

"When we were doing the recording, halfway through Guru made a list of everyone that he wanted on the album," he said. "Two of the artist that he wanted came from the legendary and iconic Wu-Tang Clan and that's Raekwon The Chef and Ghostface Killah."

After an associate suggested that Deck would work better with Guru's style, Premier called RZA and made it happen. "Above The Clouds" was unlike anything we heard previously. The odd sample, the scratched voices and the tempo were all unorthodox, but extremely dope.

"When Deck asked what the song was about, Guru said your mental," Premier revealed.

"Royalty" was a surprise banger that featured K-Ci & Jo Jo of Jodeci and celebrated the best things in life. "JFK To LAX," "Robin Hood Theory" and the autobiographical and timely "Moment of Truth" rounded out one of Gang Starr's best full-length efforts. Many of the songs from the project ended up on Full Clip: A Decade Of Gang Starr, the group's greatest hits album which arrived the following year. A version of "The Militia" featuring Rakim and west coast legend WC was a nice surprise and a testament to the universal appeal of Preemo's tracks.
