Rap legend DMC of Run-DMC was a guest recently on the Quote Goats Podcast where he spoke on the need for rap artists and record labels to release socially conscious music.

"This world is scared of a guy that looks like Future or Lil Wayne, but speaks like Chuck D," he said, before quoting Chuck D's famous line from "Shut 'Em Down": "I like Nike but wait a minute/the neighborhood supports so put some money in it/the corporations owe they gotta give up the dough to my town or else we gotta shut em down."

"We as a Hip-Hop community of Black people, educated people young and old, refuse to get vocal about the necessities that are needed when you're playing this music on the airwaves," he explained. "The music doesn't cause the problems, the problems are there. The music creates an attitude of acceptance."

In the almost one-hour sit-down, DMC also spoke about the need for balance in the music.

"Out of the $500 million that this label made, take $50 million of that and create a label up at Universal, Bad Boy, Def Jam, No limit where you tell the artists there's no cursing, no disrespect of women, etc. We need to hear some more 'Around The Way Girls' like LL [COOL J]," he said. "When LL signed with Def Jam, nobody was telling him to make records without calling women bitches and hoes. He was sixteen and he chose to do that. What's happening now with our culture of Hip Hop, we are destroying the potential of the young boys and girls in our generation."
