Big Daddy Kane On DJ Kool Herc: 'He's Thanos - He Has All The Infinity Stones'

On a recent episode of Revolt's Drink Champs with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, Big Daddy Kane discussed the legacy of DJ Kool Herc in the wake of disagreements about Hip-Hop's 50th anniversary and its timeline.

"If it's giving flowers, paying homage, and putting money into the pockets of artists, I don't see that being a major problem," Kane said. "As far as the timeline, the issue comes from [the fact that] other people contributed to Hip-Hop before Kool Herc, like DJ Hollywood and Eddie Cheeba. They were rapping before '73. You had DJs like Grandmaster Flowers, Pete DJ Jones, DJ Plummer, Disco King Mario that were DJing before Herc as well."

Kane went on to explain that Hip-Hop consists of four elements, and Herc combined them in a way that wasn't done before.

"In 1973, Herc took all these elements - MCing is one element, DJing in one element," Kane explained. "In 1973, Herc combined all of these elements — MCing, DJing, Graffiti and B Boying. He had the [Legendary] Twins, Dancin' Doug and all of them. He took all of those elements and combined them into one, and that's what Hip-Hop is. Herc is the one. He's Thanos. He has all the infinity stones. So yeah, I give Herc credit for inventing Hip-Hop in 1973. There are people who can debate me, and I respect that because I was only five years old in 1973."

Kane also stressed the importance of acknowledging legends like The Disco Twins, Eddie Cheeba, Sha Rock, DJ Hollywood, The Funky 4, The Cold Crush Brothers and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5.
