Starz announced the early season renewal of Power Book III: Raising Kanan at the virtual Television Critics Association's summer press tour. The announcement arrived ahead of the shows Aug 14 season 2 debut.

"Our passionate and loyal fans have been eagerly awaiting the season two return of Raising Kanan to see the continued transformation of a young and naive teenage Kanan Start into the ruthless no-nonsense character that they know and love," Starz president of original programming Kathryn Busby said. "We're thrilled to be doubling down on a third season with this incredible cast led by Patina (Miller) and MeKai (Kurtis)."

Previously Mekai Curtis, who plays Kanan, talked to Upscale about what he finds to be the most compelling aspect of the show.

“Yes, it’s power, drugs, sex and violence," he said. "But it’s also the story of a mother and her son and their family. And how they’re willing to protect each other."

Omar Epps, London Brown, Joey Bada$$, Hailey Kilgore, Shanley Caswell, Antonio Ortiz and Malcolm Mays round out the cast of season two, and Sascha Penn returns as the showrunner. The original Power series was created by Courtney Kemp and executive produced by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Mark Canton, Chris Selak, Kevin Fox, Santa Sierra and Natasha Gray. The Power universe also consists of spinoffs Ghost and Force. A fifth spinoff Influence was discussed, but will not come to fruition.
