Timbaland Says Collab Album With Dr. Dre Could Still Happen

Back in 2001, at a time when the world was in the early stages of praying for Dr. Dre to release Detox, Timbaland dropped a bombshell in an interview with MTV News when he revealed that him and the good doctor had spoken about doing a collaborative album called Chairmen of the Boards. After that, nothing more was ever said about the mythical project.

ASCAP Experience 2023 took over the Avalon in Hollywood, where they hosted a bevy of panels geared towards helping songwriters navigate a notoriously cutthroat industry, Timbaland was one of the keynote speakers, via Zoom, and Rock The Bells was on hand and asked the venerable soundsmith if there was still a chance of that project happening more than 20 years later.

“Anything can happen, but it’s all about timing, it’s not about ‘is there still a chance?’ Timbaland responded. “Everybody’s open, but everybody’s lives - I think right now, Snoop and Dre are working, you know what I’m saying? Like, it’s all about timing.”

After thinking about it for a quick moment, Timbo seemed more than open to reopening talks with his fellow legendary producer.

“I haven’t seen Dre but I’m sure we would all love to do it and we probably could do it, especially with where we’re at in our lives, it probably could happen,” Timbaland noted. “I never really thought about it but I will ask Dre. He loves music, he’s still doing it, he is one of thee gods, so yeah we should do that Chairmen Of The Boards. It could happen but it’s all about timing.”

In addition to making hits and continuing to grow Verzuz, his joint venture with Swizz Beatz, Timbaland currently hosts Timbo IDO’ on TikTok, where he tries to find and cultivate talent. One of his success stories was a singer and multi-instrumentalist named Chris Collins, who surprised the super producer with a live performance that had the crowd enthralled as Timbo cheered onscreen like a proud coach.

Stay tuned for more from ASCAP Experience 2023, as we recap the best moments from the “Celebrating 50 Years of Hip-Hop” panel, which featured incredible stories by Big Daddy Kane and Easy Mo Bee, and was hosted by Datwon Thomas.
