The 2022 BET Awards: Kanye Honors Diddy and Taraji Gets Real

Kicking off the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, the 2022 BET Awards was one for the ages. No shortage of star power was on-hand, as the audience and viewers at home were treated to electric performances from Lizzo, Elle Mai with special guest Babyface, and an all-star tribute to Sean "Diddy" Combs who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The tribute featured a medley of hits that included Jodeci’s “Come and Talk to Me,” Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down,” Puff Daddy’s “Victory,” Shyne’s “Bad Boyz,” Puff Daddy’s “It’s All About the Benjamins,” and “I Need a Girl (Part Two),” Busta Rhymes’ “Pass the Courvoisier, Part II,” and Puff Daddy and Faith Evans’ “I’ll Be Missing You.”

And Kanye West made a very Kanye West appearance at the show. “This is my favorite artist — you see what I’m saying?” Ye said about the Diddy during the mogul's tribute. “Back then, it was so many rules to hip-hop, and he broke all of them."

I go to him for advice to this day. He inspires so many of my life choices, my wife choices.”

Host Taraji P. Henson was among those voicing their disapproval of the Supreme Court's controversial recent overturning of Roe v. Wade. “It’s about damn time we talk about the fact that guns have more rights than a woman,” Henson said in her opening monologue.

“A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman that can give life if she chooses to."

After taking home the night's award for Best New Artist, Latto surprised fans with an appearance from Mariah Carey herself. Latto performed the remix of her hit song "Big Energy," which features Carey and samples her hit song "Fantasy."
