On November 5, 2004, Jay-Z released his documentary concert film, Fade to Black. Meant to be his final performance, since at the time he'd claimed he was retiring, the doc was filmed at Madison Square Garden.
The documentary, directed by Patrick Paulson Michael and John Warren, largely focuses on portions of his Madison Square Garden performance, but is also mixed with behind-the-scenes footage of Jay making one of his best releases, The Black Album, which catalog standouts like "99 Problems," and "Encore." Of course, one of the film's most memorable clips was when Timbaland played Jay the "Dirt Off Ya Shoulder" beat for the first time, which everyone immediately knew was a hit. Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Foxy Brown, Diddy, Dame Dash, Usher and Missy among others make guest appearances in the film.
The documentary was hard to find for years, helping it achieve almost cult status until it was made available to stream on Tidal in 2019. Of course, Jay didn't actually end up retiring, but the documentary is high-note in his long career nevertheless.
