One of the best Hip-Hop films of all time came on Nov. 8, 2002, with the release of 8 Mile. The semi-autobiographical tale marked Eminem's film debut, and even though he was already a superstar, pushed him to other-worldly pop star status.

Also starring Mekhi Phifer, Brittany Murphy, Marvel hero Anthony Mackie in his very first film role, and acclaimed actor Michael Shannon in one of his early notable appearances, 8 Mile became a pop culture phenomenon, and the movie's theme song, "Lose Yourself" became the first rap song to win an Oscar.

Written by Scott Silver and directed by Curtis Hanson, the movie was also a critical success and eventually earned $242.9 million worldwide. The soundtrack went quadruple platinum.

Mackie revealed some fun facts about that infamous battle scene in an interview earlier this year.

“There was this one day, we were sitting on the set and Eminem comes over and he’s like ‘what’s up man, I was reading a script and there is no reason for me not to like you, you are cool dude, I like you’ and then I said ‘I like you too.’And then he was like ‘Cool, So you don’t mind if I add some stuff in the script about you?" Mackie recalled. "I was like ‘About me or the character?’. He’s like ‘no, no just some character stuff’. I’m like yeah no problem. So before the entire 8 Mile final battle, he googles me and learns about me and all that stuff he basically makes fun of me as Papa Doc. [Laughs] And then I’m like ‘That’s a little personal Mr. Marshall… I grew up in a nice house, my parents were nice to me, why are you making fun of me [Everyone laughs]. He literally walked over and said this gonna be dope.”

On its 20th anniversary, 8 Mile still stands as one of the most emotionally impactful, raw Hip-Hop films of all time.
