After it had such a successful launch at the Toronto International Film Festival, One The Come Up, the new coming-of-age film based on the bestselling book by Angie Thomas, will be headed to theaters for a limited run, Variety reports. The anticipated movie marks actress Sanaa Lathan's directorial debut.
Grammy-nominated rapper Rapsody worked extensively on the film, coaching the movie's main character Bri (Jamila C. Gray), a 16-year-old burgeoning rap star who's trying to navigate life's pitfalls and love, all while coming to terms with who she is. Rap also wrote music for the film, along with 1500 or Nothing, and she celebrated its theater release on Instagram.
"Only fitting for the star performance by @milabucks and cast!" she wrote. "Mark your calendars, get the snacks to sneak in your purse and pockets, and bring friends along on September 23rd. Also, subscribe to @paramountplus and watch it again when you get home."
