A solo exhibition featuring the work of the legendary PHASE 2 will be presented by ACA Galleries.
The exhibition aims to celebrate the life and legacy of the acclaimed artist, born Michael Lawrence (Lonnie) Marrow, who was a first-generation “writer” with roots in the NYC subway art movement. PHASE 2, who began writing back in 1971, was also among the first aerosol artists to paint on canvas and exhibit in galleries, from the first exhibition in 1973 at NYC Soho’s Razor Gallery, to global exhibitions spanning from Italy to Japan.
A pillar of the culture, PHASE 2 was at the forefront of the masterpiece revolution, and ultimately invented signature styles including “phasemagorical phantastic” (bubble letters with stars), “bubble cloud” (bubble letters surrounded by a cloud pattern), “checkerboard phase phantastic” (bubble letters crosshatched), “bubble big top” (bubble letters with outsized tops), “squish luscious” (swerving, speed-streaked bubble letters), and dozens of others.
He also rhymed and released “The Roxy” in 1982. That same year, he participated in the first Hip-Hop tour sponsored by THE EUROPE 1, called "NYC RAP," where he contributed as both an aerosol artist and a DJ/ MC. He was also behind the assembly of one of the most important B-boy crews, The New York City Breakers.
A full-color catalog will accompany the exhibition featuring contributions from David Schmidlapp, Pete Nice, Vulcan, Coco 144 and Serouj Aprahamian. The exhibition will run from April 1-June 30 at ACA Galleries.
