Papoose Details His History-Making Decision to Drop an Album a Month for a Year

Papoose recently connected with Spin Magazine to pen an article about the benefits of releasing music independently.

"I've graced magazine covers, starred in reality shows ,toured in countless countries and been on billboards all around the world - all because of the gift that I've been blessed with", the Brooklyn wordsmith said. He said he doesn't take those blessings for granted and that he creates songs like "Law Library" and "Monopoly" to tell the full scope of the human experience.

"I know the impact that my voice can have, and I want to use it to teach and inspire," he explained.

Papoose credits the borough of Brooklyn as the place where his career started, but says that he always had one foot in the street life.

"Right when I was about to fall into the gutter, I caught the attention of the late, great legendary D.J. Kay Slay," he said. "Together Slay and I laid the blueprint for my consistent release method. He became my mentor, big brother and best friend and we remained close until his untimely passing this past April."

After three years of independent grinding, his tape got into the hands of Jive Records president who signed him directly via a $1.5 million dollar deal.

"That deal proved to be the worst decision of my life, but it ultimately made me stronger and taught me to always bet on myself."

It was 2021 when Papoose came up with the idea of releasing an album a month, with very little support from anyone. His distributor at the time was so frightened that they abandoned him.

"Almost everyone thought it was impossible to drop 12 albums in a year when I first presented them with my plan," he said. "They kept hitting me with the same, archaic way of releasing music: 'You have to choose a single, then promote that single ... You're going to step on your own music … The project needs space to breathe' Blah, blah, blah."

Papoose credits TuneCore as the only distributor that allowed him to release music at the one album a month rate.

"When everyone else slammed their doors in my face I was lucky to discover TuneCore, the only distributor that allowed me to share my music at such a high rate," he said. "Giving me this freedom allowed me to make history by becoming the only artist to release an album a month for a whole year, and that helped me gain support from genre giants like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Swizz Beatz, Fabolous Timbaland, and others."
