LL COOL J, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Grandmaster Flash to Close 2023 MTV VMAs With Hip-Hop Tribute

The MTV VMAs will close the show with a special tribute to Hip-Hop's 50th. DMC, Doug E. Fresh, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and LL COOL J will join previously announced performers Lil Wayne and the show's host, Nicki Minaj for the tribute.

The show will mark DMC's first VMAs performance since Run DMC performed "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and Steven Tyler in 1987. Run DMC was the first rap group on MTV.

As for LL COOL J, who is currently embarking on The F.O.R.C.E. Tour, he hosted the VMAs alongside Nicki and Jack Harlow last year, but his 2023 performance will mark his first VMAs performance in more than 25 years. In 1991, LL won a VMA for best rap video with “Mama Said Knock You Out". In 1997, he became the first Hip-Hop artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award.

This marks LL's second major performance at an awards show this year. Back in February, he hosted a massive 24-song segment at the Grammys honoring Hip-Hop's 50th that included The Roots, Black Thought, Scarface, Lil Uzi Vert, Missy Elliott, and more.

In addition to the Hip-Hop tribute, the show will also honor another Hip-Hop legend, Diddy, with the Global Icon Award.

The VMAs will air live from Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
