MTV News has officially come to an end, as 25 percent of the employees across Showtime, MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks will be affected by layoffs.

In a memo to staff, Showtime/MTV Entertainment and Paramount Media Networks president Chris McCarthy delivered the news.

"Despite Paramount’s success in streaming, we continue to feel pressure from broader economic headwinds like many of our peers,” he said. “Senior leaders in coordination with HR have been working together over the past few months to determine the optimal organization for the current and future needs of our business and as a result, we have made the very hard but necessary decision to reduce our domestic team by approximately 25%.”

MTV News was launched in 1987, and with The Week In Rock, hosted by former Rolling Stone writer and music critic Kurt Loder, was established a viable source for music news. The show started covering political news like the 1992 presidential elections with its "Choose Or Lose" campaign. Over the years, MTV News covered pivotal Hip-Hop events, such as the murders of 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. Loder also notably hosted a roundtable addressing violence in Hip-Hop which included Wyclef, Redman and D.M.C.
