MC Lyte Addresses Akademiks: "They Want To See the Proof..."

Akademiks ignited a whirlwind of controversy last week when the popular media personality asserted that Hip-Hop pioneers were "dusty." He made the comments during a recent Twitch livestream. With stars like LL COOL J, Spice-1 and others calling him out, MC Lyte was recently asked about the disparaging remarks during an interview with SiriusXM Urban View’s The Clay Cane Show.

“There's much more to learn, much more to know – if you're lucky enough, you get to live this long, right?” Lyte said, after acknowledging that she respects and reveres the pioneers who kickstarted Hip-Hop for herself and others. But she also shared that dismissals don't help anyone.

“I think it does a disservice to us as a community to think that way," Lyte explained. "But I also understand the generation that's coming up now, everything is the proof, and they want to see the proof, as opposed to feel the proof, or hear the proof. They want to see it."

Lyte is prepping for the Season Two premiere of her sitcom Partners In Rhyme on Oct. 13th. The veteran rapper/actor is staying busy, and she made it clear that people need to have a better understanding of what makes for greatness in Hip-Hop.

"And so I imagine that's what this particular person was talking about," she continued. "But needless to say, there are so many other people out there that are willing to share the truth and the history and also understand the value of everyone who has contributed to hip hop, everyone that's contributed something good.”
