On this week's Salute the Sample, Rock the Bell's exclusive series where LL COOL J, Greg Nice, and DJ Z-Trip breakdown the origin of some of Hip-Hop’s most beloved samples, the trio reminisced and paid homage to the 1994 track from the Beastie Boys, "Get It Together" featuring Q-Tip.
"Shout out to Ad Rock, the man who gave me my break," LL Cool J says at one point, nodding along to his verse, before remembering MCA, who passed away in 2012 after a battle with cancer.
"Get It Together," produced by Beastie Boys and Mario Caldato Jr., was the second single released from their fourth album, Ill Communication, following the lead song "Sabotage." The track samples the soulful-trippy 1971 song, "Headless Heroes" by singer/songwriter Eugene McDaniels from his album Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse, which DJ Z-Trip flags as "incredible." LL and Greg took particular notice of the lyrics in the existential song, especially in the first verse when McDaniels' sings, "the man who controls the board sees them all as the same."
Daniels, an acclaimed songwriter who penned the timeless hit for Roberta Flack, 1974's "Feel Like Makin Love" (later covered by D'Angelo), has been a sample favorite for rap producers. Pete Rock and Earl Sweatshirt also used the psychedelic, funk-jazz grooves from this album in particular.
