LL COOL J Salutes the Mellow, "Hallucinogenic" Sample From "93 'Til Infinity"

On this week's Salute the Sample, Rock the Bell's exclusive series where LL COOL J, Greg Nice, and DJ Z-Trip breakdown the origin of some of Hip-Hop’s most beloved samples, the trio reminisced on the rap classic, "93 'Til Infinity" by some "cool brothers" aka Bay Area group Souls of Mischief.

Almost 20 years after it was first released in 1974, Souls of Mischief sampled Bill Cobham's slower, somber track, "Heather," for what's arguably one of the most memorably distinctive tracks in Hip-Hop history, "93 'Til Infinity," featured on their classic 1993 debut of the same name.

Emerging from the Hieroglyphics Crew, the group (comprised of A-Plus, Pesto, Opio and Tajai) helped stamp the alt-rap sound of the west coast, carving out a lane for the style in the midst of Dr. Dre's dominating G-Funk that was coming out of L.A., DJ Quik's brand of gangster jazz-funk coming out of Compton, and the "gorilla-tryin'-to-get-up-out-of-the-trunk" funk coming out of the Bay courtesy of E-40 and the rest of The Click. They remain one of the most respected crews in Hip-Hop, with a unique, recognizable sound.

"Hip-Hop, ain't nothin' like it," Greg Nice says, as soon as the classic beat drops, as LL nods along.

Last week, Greg shared that he's been part of a group with Special Ed, Kwame, Dana Dane, Chubb Rock, and Monie Love called The Alumni for the past four or five years, and they've been consistently touring.

"It's like looking at the Temptations of Hip-Hop," Greg explains, adding that when they do shows, they play them DJ-style, with each rapper jumping in and flowing seamlessly to the next song. "You're gettin' hits back to back."
