On this week's Salute the Sample, Rock the Bells' exclusive series where LL COOL J, Greg Nice, and DJ Z-Trip breakdown the origin of some of Hip-Hop’s most beloved samples, the trio salutes the Brand Nubian's 1992 classic, "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down."
Produced by legendary producer, Diamond D, the song samples Lou Donaldson's 1969 version of The Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing," which was the first song the group released after they left Motown Records. Over the years it's been sampled and covered countless times, including by Ann Peebles and Aretha Franklin. "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down" was the lead single from Brand Nubian's 1993 album, In God We Trust.
As the beat kicks in, LL admits he never knew the exact words to the "nothin but abuse" chant. "Is that what they were sayin'?" he asks, Greg, who's rapping along to the song. "I never knew."
Before the clip finishes, LL takes the time to let everyone know what Salute the Sample is about — paying homage to the culture and making sure it's properly preserved.
"Whether you're the root or the current fruit, we appreciate you," LL COOL J said, celebrating Hip-Hop artists, both new and classic. "We're champions for Hip-Hop and champions for all those who love Hip-Hop."
