Kendrick Lamar has qualified for Oscar consideration in the Best Live Action Short category for his short film, We Cry Together.

The six-minute film was shown at the Lamelle Royal Theatre in West Los Angeles earlier this year, giving it Oscar consideration, according to The Hollywood Reporter. We Cry Together stars Taylour Paige and Kendrick in an abusive relationship, and details their break up. The song is from his latest album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, and debuted at #16 on the Billboard 100.

pgLang, the creative collective founded by Kendrick and his manager Dave Free, ensured no cellphone footage of the film would leak to social media, and a special security detail collected the phones of all attendees. Mostly friends and family associated with the film were able to view it, and 20 tickets were made available to the general public.

The Best Live Action Short category recognizes films that run 40 minutes or less with an eligibility window that runs from October 1, 2021 until September 30 of this year . This year Taylor Swift, Jeremy Lin and Naomi Osaka join Kendrick for consideration in the category.
