Kendrick Lamar already has his eyes on an Oscar for his short film for the song "We Cry Together" starring Zola actress Taylour Paige, and now, he continues to showcase his considerable acting chops in the video for "Count Me Out" starring Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren as his therapist. The song is from his acclaimed latest release, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
Co-directed by Lamar and pgLang co-founder Dave Free, the video begins quietly. Kendrick is seated at a piano, his silence filling the space until Mirren questions if he heard her. He apologizes and says he thought his time was up, and the two discuss a parking lot incident with a white woman who accuses him of taking his spot. Kendrick recounts the story, noting his chagrin a the accusation before admitting that he actually did indeed take her spot with a laugh. Mirren joins in for a moment before questioning him about a text he sent at 2 a.m., "I feel like I'm falling." Then the music starts.
The video includes a number of thoughts centered on Kendrick's psyche, including Lamar receiving a COVID test and fake smiling for a toast with former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and venture capitalist Vivi Nevo. There are also along cameos from Free, pgLang signee Tanna Leone and wife Whitney Alford.
Mirren also narrates the live show for Kendrick's Big Steppers Tour, which is currently running through Australia and New Zealand. Check out the video below.
