Irv Gotti on Jay-Z: "Jay Didn't Need Nobody — It Was All Hov"

Murder Inc. founder Irv Gotti appeared on the most recent episode of Revolt's Drink Champs, where he discussed Roc-A-Fella Records and his perspective of the dynamics of its three founders.

When asked by co-host N.O.R.E. if he ever thought the chemistry between the men would weaken, Gotti answers in the affirmative. "Jay didn't need nobody," he says. "Hov is Hov, and once he got on he didn't need nobody. [DMX] needed people around to help him, and Ja needed me to help him. Once Jay got on he didn't need nobody. He was picking the beats, and rapping over the beats – it was all Hov. [Dame] started Roc-A-Fella with Jay and he should be credited, but he was along for the ride, and it was a good ride."

Irv also talked about Murder Inc., the group consisting of Jay-Z, DMX and Ja Rule, and why he thinks the project never came to fruition.

"The Murder Inc. shit was something that I wanted to do because Jay, Ja and X were like my brothers," he explained. "It wasn't about money for me – it was about us gettin' in the studio and servin' 'em. X was with it and Ja was with it and I tried two times to make that album happen. It's just my opinion, but I don't think that Jay wanted to get in the room with X and Ja. He is a very smart person. He will make a record with R. Kelly, because R. Kelly worships him. Kanye West and Jay Electronica worship Jay-Z. X and Ja don't worship him. [It's like] you're my man, but when that beat comes on you're not above me gettin' at you."
