Acclaimed comic series Hip-Hop Family Tree is getting a hardcover release. In time for the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, Fantagraphics has announced the release of a hardcover collection of Ed Piskor's popular collection of comics titled Hip-Hop Family Tree: The Omnibus.

The series started in 2013, and serves as an animated history of Hip-Hop chronicling DJs, MCs, record label owners, B-Boys and Girls and Graf artists, and was originally released in four volumes. Omnibus marks the first time that the series has been included in one book and includes bonus material like annotations, covers and brand-new artwork.

To celebrate the release of Hip-Hop Family Tree: The Omnibus, Piskor has created a new series of Hip-Hop trading cards inspired by the Marvel Comics cards of the early '90s and featuring a number of iconic artists.

Piskor recently shared with IGN his vision for the characters that he chose to highlight in the series.

"When I selected the artists for the card series I wanted to choose some people who were immediately recognizable and maybe hyperbolic in their aesthetics," he explained. "I needed to come up with something fun on the back covers of the HHFT comic book and these drawings felt like the right approach. Also, the design of the cards, in Hip-Hop fashion, is sampled from the fantastic Marvel Universe Series II card set from around 1991 or 1992, probably the same year that Yo! MTV Rap's trading cards. One major exercise with HHFT is to constantly interchange the relationship between comics and Hip-Hop."

Hip-Hop Family Tree: Omnibus is available now and can be ordered here.
