In the wake of ongoing online discussion regarding the creation of Hip-Hop culture, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 front man Grandmaster Mele Mel has posted a video to his social media accounts which gives his viewpoint. "There's this whole thing going on about whether Puerto Ricans or Black people are the backbone of Hip-Hop," he says. "Hip-Hop is not Black culture, it's Bronx culture. The building blocks of Hip-Hop were formed in the Bronx."
Mel then goes on to point out that all of the first prominent Hip-Hop DJ's including Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, and Grandwizzard Theodore are all from the Bronx. "And the first MC, you're looking at him. I was born and raised in the Bronx," he explained. "The Bronx culture is Hip-Hop culture. You have two sides going back and forth about who started Hip-Hop, and you didn't even say any of the Bronx guys name's. The people who are talking about who started Hip-Hop weren't even there."
