Legendary Hip-Hop DJ Grandmaster Flash was the focus of the seventh episode of A&E's Origins Of Hip Hop which aired on Tuesday (7/12). Narrated by Nas, the episode focused on Flash and his drive to improve upon the techniques of his predecessors, particularly Kool Herc.

"With Herc, the point of execution and locking with the audience wasn't concerning to him," Flash explained, in regards to Herc's timing and tendency to leave the dancefloor "in disarray."

Much of the first half of the one-hour episode focused on Flash's mission to improve upon what he saw as the technical deficiencies of those who came before him.

Flash protege and legendary turntablist Grand Wizzard Theodore, assistant EZ Mike and Rahiem of the Furious Five assist in telling the story of the man who Rahiem says is "the reason why turntables outsell guitars three-to-one." The last half of the episode discusses Flash and his group, The Furious 5, and their rise from 23 Park in the Bronx to international fame as recording artists. It also details the group's breakup and a descent into drugs, which almost killed Flash.

"I had to find a way to start over, to jump back in," Flash shared. The Bronx native revealed that drugs put him into a coma that almost took his life. "But God said 'not yet.'"

Origins of Hip Hop is now streaming on A&E.
