Fat Joe: 'Our Healthcare System Needs Comprehensive Reform'

Fat Joe is headed to Washington. The rapper/activist is set to join lawmakers on Capital Hill to advocate for health care price transparency.

Joe, who works with the non-profit Power to the Patients, an organization that advocates for healthcare price transparency, will also meet with White House officials, The Hill reports. Additionally, he'll headline a performance hosted by the nonprofit next Thursday, just ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington. Busta Rhymes, French Montana, and Rick Ross will also perform.

“Our healthcare system needs comprehensive reform and I remain committed to using my platform to work alongside Power to the Patients and give a voice to the voiceless,” Fat Joe told The Hill in an exclusive statement. “We must demand accountability from hospitals and insurers, so people can get a transparent understanding of the cost of their medical bills and make more informed financial decisions on healthcare services. With prices hidden, often times, the bills are not even consistent at the same hospital,” he added. “It’s tearing families apart.”

In February, Fat Joe teamed up with Power to the Patients for a PSA focused on fighting injustices in the healthcare system. The PSA was a direct response to a lack of hospital compliance and enforcement of a federally mandated rule that took effect in January 2021. The rule required all U.S. hospitals to provide clear, upfront pricing information for all their services, however, PatientRightsAdvocate.org shows that less than 25% of hospitals are complying with the rule.

"We have to change the healthcare system and hold hospitals and insurers accountable to provide more transparency on the price of care. They are charging way too much money and the bills are not even consistent," Fat Joe said, per a press release. "Somebody could get an MRI for $300 and someone right behind them could be paying thousands for the same MRI. Right now, millions across the country are being dragged into debt because they're blindsided by the cost of these medical bills. Families are falling apart. People are losing their homes. People are getting bankrupted because of hospital bills and healthcare."
