What We Learned From Das EFX's 'Unsung' Episode

Das EFX, the duo representing Trenton, New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York celebrated the 30th anniversary of their debut full length album Dead Serious last week (Thursday, April 7th) and on Sunday, April 10th their Unsung episode debuted on Tv One.

Much of the episode was recorded where they met – on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA where they were both English majors. “Skoob was more serious about music than me. He kind of inspired me to see what I could come up with” recalls Drayz. “We had one or two classes together, and this dude was always late” he continued. “I met him and we started rhymin’ together and I started comin’ in late with him.”

The duo started writing rhymes together and rockin’ at “gym jams” on campus and their former manager, A. Blitz says that in the early days it was more competitive like a battle between the two. The two joined forces, later calling themselves Das (Dre and Skoob) EFX (an acronym with Swahili origins). It was at a rap contest at the Tropicana night club 40 minutes away in Richmond, Virginia where Drayz and Skoob entered a rap contest hosted by EPMD that changed their lives. In the contest with 100 dollars as the prize, Das EFX performed “Klap Ya Handz” , one of their earliest songs which appeared on their debut album.

“When they came on, we were like what is that? We knew immediately that it was something special” said EPMD’s Erick Sermon. “Just their camaraderie and chemistry. They rolled in real smooth” said Parrish Smith, the other half of EPMD. “Then it came to who won the battle” Parrish said. “There were three cats in there that were super nice. We made a compromise to let the second runner up win, and catch up with Drayz and Skoob backstage and say ‘You didn’t win this, but how would you like to win a record contract?’"

D.J. Scratch and K- Solo appeared on the episode and spoke about the influence of Das EFX and how the EPMD break up split the once happy family of the Hit Squad (who consisted of EPMD, K Solo, Redman and Craig Mack) into two camps - The Def Squad and The Hit Squad. Books says solemnly : "Erick and Parrish had issues that existed prior to us, and we got caught in the middle of a storm." According to Parrish, "The deal was 'I'll give you Redman, because I already have K-Solo, and we will go half on Das EFX." "He (Parrish) had 60 percent and I owned 40 percent of Das EFX. When EPMD broke up, I sold my 40 percent back to Parrish" said Sermon.

The episode also spoke about the seldom mentioned production team Solid Scheme that helped launch the career of Das EFX. "The 'Mic Checka' single handedly caused Chris and Dee (of Solid Scheme) to become their own entity aside from Das EFX" said A. Blitz. In 2001 Chris Charity of Solid Scheme died of a massive heart attack, which was a huge blow to the group.

Industry politics, changes in Hip Hop and the fact that so many Das EFX copy cats were born in the wake of Dead Serious caused the group to eventually split, and the members didn't talk to each other for years. Skoob and Drayz are back together performing around the world, and are talking about releasing new music soon.
