“The hip hop community has, from the start, been doing what the rest of media is only now catching up to,” Chuck D said. “Long before any conglomerate realized it was time to wake up, Hip-Hop had been speaking out and telling truths. Working with PBS and BBC is an opportunity to deliver these messages through new ways and help explain hip hop’s place in history and hopefully inspire us all to take it further.”
Boula said the partnership with PBS and BBC Music was especially important because they are known for creating great documentaries.
“Chuck D and I look forward to working with them to take this account of such an important movement to the world," Boula said. "People are finally open to hearing and learning about the history of all Americans, and we want to deliver authentic, compelling and truthful stories to them.”
Through interviews and archival footage, the four-part docuseries will focus on the origins of the art form, exploring how it impacted American thought and perspectives through a racial and social justice lens, intertwining important historical moments in the country's history along the way.
In addition to producing the documentary, Chuck D will display his art skills later this year with the release of his first fine art book, LIVIN’ LOUD–ARTitation, which features over 250 of his paintings, sketches and drawings. The book will be released on November 29th and is available for pre-order at chuckd.com.
