Nobody else sounds like Mannie Fresh.
Born Byron Thomas in New Orleans, LA's 7th Ward, the kid Mannie Fresh was raised in Hip-Hop. Fresh began DJing as a teen in the mid-1980s, and debuted as one half of an MC/DJ duo with MC Gregory D. But it was when Mannie landed at Cash Money Records in the mid-1990s that he began reshaping the sound of southern rap. After the commercial breakthrough of Juvenile's Fresh-produced hit "Ha," Mannie Fresh became one of the most well-known names in music. With Bryan "Birdman" Williams giving him the greenlight to become the sound of Cash Money, Fresh went one of the game's most enviable run of hits.
His distinctive sound could only come from New Orleans, and it often sounds one foot in the future. His brand of melodic bounce became the backbone of Cash Money Records' late 1990s/early 2000s commercial run, as Fresh helmed hits for label stars Lil Wayne, Juvenile, B.G., The Hot Boyz, and he and Birdman's vanity outfit Big Tymers.
He's truly one of one. But we tried to pick ten of the most definitive tracks from Mannie Fresh.
