Widely recognized as among the most influential women MCs in history, Yo-Yo blasted onto the scene with her 1991 debut, Make Way for the Motherlode.
The project was led by the catchy lead single, "You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo" produced by Sir Jinx and Ice Cube and featuring a prominent sample of Earth Wind & Fire's "Devotion." Immediately, Yo-Yo let it be known that she's an "intelligent Black woman," an ideology she'd continue with her crew, IBWC, Intelligent Black Woman's Coalition, throughout her career as an activist.
Her sophomore project, Black Pearl, dropped in 1992. With production handled by DJ Pooh, Sir Jinx, Down Low Productions, DJ Muggs, Rashad Coes and DJ Bobcat, and with Ice Cube serving as executive producer, Yo-Yo continued to expand on her ideology, dropping gems about Black life, activism, and womanhood.
Decades later, Yo-Yo, who recently launched her cooking show, Downright Delicious, continues to showcase her star power. She's also set to perform at the Rock The Bells Festival on Aug. 5 in Queens.
Full of gems that still resonate years later, here are 3 of the best moments from Black Pearl.
