The pressure that comes with living up to the legacy of a parent can be great for any child, but imagine you're the offspring of one of Hip-Hop's greatest dynasties.

Chey, the daughter of Method Man, and Weather Park, the son of Ol' Dirty Bastard take it all in stride, while carving out their own lanes in the ever changing landscape of Hip-Hop. In a Rock The Bells exclusive Chey and Weather discuss their lives growing up with Hip-Hop legends, the pressures of being Hip-Hop royalty, their musical influences, and their latest single, "Yah Yah".

Chey says that she was exposed to a plethora of different music styles in her household. "We of course had the original Wu-Tang, but then we had Ashanti and a lot of Stevie Wonder. As far as Rap goes it was a lot of LL COOL J, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Ja Rule - a lot of New York artists."

Weather Park reveals that he grew up primarily with his mother who was heavily into r&b. "She played a lot of Jagged Edge and Jon B. There were other artists, but those two stand out the most," he shares.

Weather further reveals that he didn't hear Hip-Hop in his household. "To be real with you, the only way that I had access to Hip-Hop was through video games. Growing up with my cousin, he had all the video games. So Tony Hawk Underground had Nas' 'The World Is Yours' on it. Even NBA 2k9 back then had Pharcyde songs on it. I'm not sure what drew me to those songs, but that was my early introduction. I also had access to Wu-Tang Forever.

"I knew that I wanted to be in the spotlight early, but not necessarily as an artist," Chey says. "I was a cheerleader, so that was my performance as a youth, but now I just kinda stepped into it full force, Shout out to my management SMG Productions, we just went full steam ahead. We had a podcast before, and there was a studio next door. I wrote a song and we recorded it. It sounded good, and now its blowin' up. Shout out to 'Hair & Nails', my first baby. I'm definitely loving everything that I'm doing."

I was around my father a lot as a baby, and I have some memories of experiences with him, but they are short because he passed so early. My birth in 1995 was at the same time of their biggest success.

Regarding his father, Weather says that he doesn't look at him as Ol' Dirty Bastard, but as Russell Jones. "In my head I'm always saying that I'm missing out on a father, not this big celebrity. I think that his aura and spirit were huge enough to reach a mass of people because his story and energy is so powerful. There was never any pressure because my dad faced a lot of challenges, and he worked hard to overcome them.

Due to that, this is the epitome of that. You have a fatherless child, and I faced a lot of my own challenges, and I call them slight distractions because they took away any pressure of me being Ol' Dirty Bastard's son. I feel more pressure from just being the average Black man in the hood trying to survive everyday."

Chey says that she on the other hand has felt pressure as the daughter of Method Man. "I've absolutely withstood some pressure throughout my life, [being the daughter of Method Man]," she reveals. "The way people want me to look and sound, even growing up, what school they thought I should be going to because of how they thought I grew up.

Now with my music people want to know why I'm not this hard, gritty, grungy girl. I try to show my versatility in my freestyles and performances, because that's how I want to come off to people. I can tap into everything. I have something for everyone to enjoy that doesn't have to sound like one specific sound."

quotes
When people ask me my top 5 I don't include my dad because that's what they want me to do, but he's definitely my number one. He's sick.

- Chey

"People always say that I have a lot of different angles musically, and that I'm trying to figure out my direction," Weather says. "I'm not trying to figure anything out, my music grows with me and time. My name is Weather Park for a reason. I come like the weather, you never know how the weather is gonna come, because it's controlled by God. It could be hot one day, or snow, rain. That's how I am. If this is what I'm feelin', this is what you're gonna get. That's why 'Ya Ya' is out, that's my energy. I'm turned up right now, feelin' good about myself!"

As far as "Yah Yah", their first single together, Weather says,"We just got together and nothing was forced. She heard the record and loved it, and it just made sense. She already knows how I'm comin', and I know how she's comin'. I knew it was gonna be fire, that's what we do, we were born for this. My man Haysus produced the track. We've always been in connection, but I wanted to find my spot , it was all about the right time."

"It's absolutely a dope song, and "Yah Yah" is like a feeling to me," Chey shares. "I wanted to communicate that through my lyrics and tell a story that males and females can relate to. Someone makes plans with you, then they cancel, but I still look good though, I'm just in the crib doin' what I gotta do.

There's a line in there where I said 'I know my worth, plus I'm educated and I'm pretty too.' I wrote that specifically for the little girls that are gonna listen to me. I'm a college graduate and a big advocate for education, and a lot of what I say is for them. I want them to have that as a mantra, knowing their worth, and being educated and pretty too."

Chey and Weather Park are both pursuing acting, have secured roles in upcoming projects, and are working on new music.
