Born To Mack was $hort's fourth studio album and his first on a major label, even though it originally debuted on his Dangerous Music label. He reportedly sold 50,000 copies of the album independently before it got picked up by Jive Records. "Dope Fiend" beat is revered as a Bay template, and E-40, who participated in All City Day: Bay Area, recognized its influence as well.
"The Bay area sound was originally referred to as Mob Music," he said. "Mob Music was before a lotta music. Too $hort would call it 'The Dope Fiend Beat.' E-40 and The Click call it 'Mob Music' because of its heavy basslines. So, between Too $hort and E-40 and the Click you got Studio Ton, Mike Mosley, Ant Banks, and even Too $hort, he's a producer. He produced all of his early music."
