Fugees Reunion Tour Canceled Due to Pras' Allegations

Grammy Award-winning rap group The Fugees canceled their highly anticipated reunion tour months ago, reportedly due to COVID concerns. According to Rolling Stone, a new report suggests that it was instead Pras Michel's legal problems that halted the show.

In 2019, Pras pleaded not guilty to federal conspiracy charges and falsifying records due to his role in a Malaysian wealth fund's campaign finance violations. He was amongst several people that the Justice Department identified as associates of Jho Low and 1MDB, a wealth fund that promotes economic development in Malaysia. Low is accused of stealing from the $4.5 billion slush fund, while Michel is accused of receiving a minimum of $8 million and as much as 40 million for assisting Low.

In 2021, Pras received additional charges in connection with an attempt to lobby the Trump administration to drop its investigation into Low and 1MDB. Despite Pras' federal charges the Fugees still announced an international reunion tour in September of 2021, mere days before the group performed a brief comeback show at a Global Citizen event in New York. The tour was postponed and later canceled reportedly due to the pandemic causing difficult touring conditions.

According to Puck, the Justice Department prevented Pras from participating in the international tour due to his federal trial which is scheduled to begin in November. He reportedly turned down a plea deal where he would have served a 16-month prison sentence and financial retribution to Malaysia in exchange for pleading guilty to an obstruction of justice charge. Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill performed a set at July's Essence Festival without Pras.
