The highly anticipated latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: No Way Home, premiered this Friday (December 17), setting some of the highest box office records since the beginning of the pandemic in 2019. As super-hero fanatics rushed theaters in their spandex and Spider-Man masks, the film went on to gross $587 million worldwide on opening weekend. 

Hip-hop fans will recognize De La Soul’s classic “The Magic Number” from their 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising. The song appears at the ending credits of the film before a mid-credit cut scene. 

De La Soul’s music has accompanied many feature films over the years, the group can be heard on soundtracks for movies like Boiler Room, Osmosis Jones, and High Fidelity. 

De La Soul recently ended a year-long dispute with Tommy Boy Records after they offered the group an offensive 10% of the royalties to their projects. After four years of failed negotiations and conflict, Reservoir Media bought Tommy Boy Records for $100 million USD, finally earning the group masters to their catalog which is set to hit streaming services in the near future.
