Walking With A Panther
Walking With A Panther was released on June 9, 1989, and it produced the singles "Big Ole Butt," "One Shot At Love" and "Jingling Baby," in addition to the previously mentioned lead single. The album contained a plethora of different styles, including rap ballads, which LL was no known for, hardcore lyrical bangers, and dance songs that banged in the clubs.
"Nitro," with its "Funky Drummer" flip courtesy of The Bomb Squad, is one of the standouts on Walking With A Panther. Uncle L proves to any detractors and naysayers that he hasn't missed a step lyrically, and his delivery is extremely high-energy, living up to the song's title. "Droppin' 'Em" matches the energy and intensity in LL's flow on "Nitro," and the Muffla-produced track is one of the best on the project.
"Fast Peg" is a one-minute banger where L drops a cautionary tale about women who date hustlers and the consequences of their decision. Over a stripped down drum loop, LL delivers a high energy performance that remains a stand out on the project. "Big Ole Butt," with its hilarious video, is an ode to shapely women and LL's love for them. The track, produced by Muffla, has a funk feel due to the chop of Zapp's "More Bounce To The Ounce." The Muffla-produced "Jingling Baby" was one of the biggest hits from this platinum selling project, and its remix courtesy of Marley Marl was a direct bridge to LL's next project, Mama Said Knock You Out.
Walking With A Panther peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and number one on the top Hip-Hop/R&B chart.
