RTB Rewind: King Tee Releases 'Tha Triflin' Album'

Out of the box, Compton California's King Tee had the image of a west coast MC with the sensibilities and flow of one from the east. His early singles like "Bass," "Payback's A Mutha," and "The Coolest" contained a flow that was more in line with what was happening on the east coast than the West.

Tee's third project Tha Triflin' Album serves as a further display of his nontraditional production and flow as a west coast artist. Tha Triflin Album was released a year after Dr. Dre's sonic assault, The Chronic, and in the same year as Snoop Dogg's groundbreaking Doggystyle. A great majority of left coast acts had adopted the g-funk style pioneered by Laylaw Goodman and Dr. Dre, but this release sounds like it could have been produced by one of New York's top sample-based producers.

Produced largely by DJ Pooh and The Alkaholiks, with assistance from Broadway, Marley Marl, Bobcat and Aladdin, King Tee's third and last release on Capitol Records contained features from Ice Cube, The Alkaholiks, Mad Kap, and Nefertiti. The album's lead single, "Bust Dat Ass" featuring his group, Tha Alkaholiks, contains a chopped Sly And The Family Stone sample and a playful laid-back flow that feels a lot more like the Double XX Posse than the latest Death Row release.

The album's intro "Drunk Tekneek" is a slow-tempo banger that sees King Tee flaunting a more relaxed flow than usual. "Got It Bad Y'all" features Tha Alkaholiks and King Tee trading clever lines and the hook, "I got it bad y'all, when it comes to the pen and the pad y'all." "On the Rox" is a clever storytelling rhyme where Tee substitutes the names of the characters with several different alcohol brands.

Marley Marl's remix of "At Your Own Risk," which originally appeared on King Tee's 1990 album of the same name, is another standout track on the album, which peaked at #85 on the US Billboard 200 and #17 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

In addition to solidifying King Tee's position as one of the best in the west, Tha Triflin' Album was a great vehicle to introduce and promote Tha Alkaholiks, and their 1993 debut, 21 And Over.
